Flu and Pneumonia Shots

18 October 2009 21 Comments

Are you getting Vaccinated this year?

I received a flu shot in one arm yesterday and a pneumonia in the other and I’m been sleeping and feeling miserable ever since yesterday at 3 pm I can’t remember resting this much since my surgery and treatments for ovarian cancer in January 08.  I feel  awful and this was suppose to be a day I could do what ever I wanted maybe even walk the mall for nothing but window shopping and begin to think about the upcoming holidays oh well don’t they say “the road to hell is paved with good intentions” thus I should just be happy that as of 2:30 today, I’ve feeling a little better and let it go as now I’m protected against pneumonia, (which was a concern) and the normal flu and a little discomfort is worth the protection and I’m on the mend.

Therefore I was wondering if your going to get the flu shots and if older like me the shot for pneumonia although be prepared if you do, my arm hurt so badly I lost my range of motion, couldn’t lift it for awhile plus I’ve been taking Tylenol every six hours for the soreness which has subsided however I had no idea it could be so painful.  Have you had a similar experience with the shots and what were your symptoms and did you get any types of flu even after you took the vaccines, now I’m considering the H1 however I’m apprehensive of any possible complications after feeling so badly this weekend convinced I’ll the one who will have a another reaction. I received my shot from a nurse at my general parishioners office and she didn’t tell me anything regarding how I might feel and I can’t help but believe this couldn’t be just me and shouldn’t they give you some idea of what to expect, how long and what to do until it passes I felt blindsided and wished as with prescriptions you receive that little brochure telling you what to be expecting.

So let me know what your experience has been and if you’re going to take the shots again or why not, I’m undecided about the H1 however concerned especially for my younger grandchildren it seems as though this is one complex virus and I certainly hope we are able to get free of it soon although I don’t think they obviously know the negatives about the vaccine to date what have you heard?

We usually never get flu shots, but it just so happened that my son had his physical scheduled on the same day that the flu shots were delivered to his pediatrician. I did have him get the shot, and he felt terrible the next day and had a slight fever. I was not too happy, because he is never ever sick so I felt like I did him a disservice. I think we’re done with flu shots, and we’re definitely not getting the H1n1 shot. The doctor did tell me that next year the seasonal flu shot & the H1N1 shot will be combined into one shot.

We did get our flu shots this year, as we do every year. The nurse actually broke the needle in my arm! It didn’t hurt and she felt worse than I did. I learned a little trick over the years about shots. If you don’t tense your arm muscles, and relax the arm of choice like a rag doll, there doesn’t seem to be any soreness afterward. Our doctor is saving the H1N1 for children and pregnant women, like my daughter. I do think she should get one. What a world!

I have never taken both shots. When I have flu, Doctors will usually ask us to take pills such as \Periton\.

My father in law died due to Hepatitis B before (Hepatitis B is a leading cause for liver cancer). After he passed away, we did our health check and surprisingly, I had no defense against Hepatitis B. So I took Hepatitis B shots. 3 times. Fortunately for me, it does not have any side effects. At the end of this year, I’m planning to do another health screening. Hopefully I will have the defense against Hepatitis B.

    Have a nice day.

I don’t get Flu shots—I use to, maybe 12 or 15 years ago, but not since then and I do not plan to get one this year…nor the H 1 shot either. I have had the Pneumonia shot because of my History with Pneumonia…..But I cannot say I had a bad reaction to it.
I think these decisions are very personal and what one person does and why they do what they do may only be applicable to that person. That’s just my opinion. I know some people who wouldn’t go a year without getting the Flu shot and they definitely will get the
H 1 shot, too. And I know quite a few other people who do not believe in getting any of them. It’s so individual, it seems.

My wife and I both got the flu shot.We were both slightly sick for a few days. Our arms also hurt.My wife’s was worse.I feel it is best to be a little sick for a couple of days rather than to get the flu.My granddaughter is five. Her doctor says it is best to get the shot.He is afraid of what the H1N1 does to children. I guess everyone has to make that decision.Hang in there with your blog. I really enjoy reading it.

Hi dear Dorothy, I avoid all shots. I am so allergic to western medicine. I mean literally to antibiotics, cortisone, anesthesia, the works. Have had some pretty violent reactions. So I have had to make sure I stay very very healthy and use a lot of alternative healing methods. I was only hospitalized once and it was horrible for me, due to my allergic reactions to everything.

But my heart goes out to you for suffering from this. The last shot I had was years ago when I went to Australia, had to have it to get into the country. I think it was tetanus shot…not sure. But I was in agony for days. So I can understand how you must feel.

Know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.
I am sending you love my beautiful friend.
    Robin

PS In my next post I am linking to your post titled When I Die Don’t Tell Anyone. I thinks that’s the title of it. I love that post. Hugs to you dear one, Robin

Hi Dorothy was really glad to hear you got your flue shot. First of all I have been getting them for 10 years never have I ever got sick this was the first year my arm hurt & so did Joe’s Their is nothing alive in the vaccine it will not make you sick unless you are allergic to eggs or you were sick to begin with With the pneumonia shot it always hurts for a few days. The good news they are saying only 1 pneumonia shot in a lifetime before it was 2 within 5 yrs I think TYLENOL EXTRA STRENGTH is the best & the safest of all pain pills but if you take to many you might start getting headaches take care

Hi! I’ve heard of people suffering from flu like symptoms after a flu injection. Some people swear by them and others avoid them like the plague. They offered us a free flu injection at the hospital I worked at but it was far too late. One look at my blood shot eyes and runny nose should have told them it was pointless.

My kids and wife got their shots. I’m getting my regular flu shot this week.

We’re still discussing the H1N1 but haven’t decided. It’s likely though. There has been discussion about ingredients. Squalene and Thimerasol specifically. Worth doing some research.

    Very confusing and overwhelming.

Sorry you don’t feel well. Hope you feel better soon.

    Dorothy,
I thought of your post while I was watching the news last night. They mentioned that the typical person often has “flu like symptons” for the next 3-5 days after getting the shot. To me that sounds an awful lot like getting the actual flu.

  • Mel Alarilla said:

It’s advisable to get our flu shot as early as possible so that we will be immune to the dreaded H1N1 virus. It’s good that it is already available in the US and most western countries. It is still not available in the Philippines and other third world countries. What our countrymen are dreading right now is leptospirosis or the lethal virus from flooded streets caused by urine from rats. Thanks for the post. God bless you always.

NO flu shot for me or my wife. In NY they are making all people in the health care industry take the flu shot whether they want it or not. I think it should be your own personal decision to do as you see fit for your own body.

PS Hiya Dorothy aka Granny :-)

Yesterday I went to my lung Dr and thet talked me into the regular flu and pneumonia shot I have been so sick and have slept the day away my arm that I received my pneumonia shot hurt so bad I actually could not use it even my armpit area hurt I hope that this really helps because as of right now I wish I had not received these injections because I feel like crap.

Wow, I’m so sorry you feel sick. Hope you feel better soon. I’m still not so sure about these flu shots or the H1N1 shots. My mom, who has been a nurse for over 40 years, got the flu shot about 15 years ago and had a very bad reaction and came down with Guillain-Barré Syndrome . She now has permanent neurological damage and has some serious health problems. I guess these shots really scare me. Hope you feel better soon Dorothy. Thanks so much for your supportive comment on my blog. You’re awesome!!

    Hugs

I didn’t get flu shots for many years, but some years ago when my husband’s immune system was very weak he asked that I do so, so I started taking them every year. Though he has since died, I have continued to take the general flu shot.

The H1N1 vaccination is only now having limited availability here in the Southern Calif. Los Angeles area. I could qualify for the vaccination since I’m a part time health care worker, but the places to obtain them are few. Usually the huge long waiting lines far exceed the number of shots they have available. I think those in other age groups who want the vaccine and are at greater risk than I should have priority.

My daughter and granddaughter on the east coast who are in high risk age groups have just recovered from the Swine flu. The vaccine was not yet available there so they couldn’t have gotten either the nasal mist or vaccine if they had wanted it. Individuals were contracting that flu before school even started there this fall.

hi there: well my husband and i and son got the regular fue shot, on wednesday, i myself cannot have the h1n1 because of having ms.

our doctor however, immunize everyone in his office, it didnt matter if you were high risk or not. anyhow the moral of the story is my husband is so sick now he can hardly standup, he has respiratory problems and has always had the flu shot before and never did it send him sailing on his patuse.

should i let the clinic no, or is this something that will pass.
