Oh dear! In the effort to make full disclosure, I should start by saying that the very word bleach makes me cringe.

Having an illness called endometriosis (one of many chronic conditions I have) that some studies have linked to organochlorines and other toxins, I work hard avoid bleach.

I also have multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) and simply walking into a restaurant that is mopping the floor with bleach results in me pivoting and walking back out because the fumes make me very ill.

We have an above-ground pool and don’t use any chlorine. We use a chlorine alternative because I can no longer tolerate (skin-wise) chlorinated pools.

So, I must admit that when I got to the bleach in the bathtub portion of your post, I got really queasy because I just can’t imagine bathing in bleach… no matter how diluted it is.

Whenever an issue comes up regarding chemicals, the first place I go is to one of the highest quality sites I know: The Canary Report. That’s what I did tonight.

On November 11th, Susie Collins (Editor of The Canary Report) just posted a public service announcement (video) on household disinfectants (perfect timing)! I just viewed it tonight and I highly recommend it. (I won’t link it here because I don’t want to be spammy but you’ll find it on her site if you look at the 11/11 post).

I read what you said here:

I couldn’t agree more that drug companies (or “Big Pharma”, as I like to call them) engage in some alarming practices!!! (You can read more about this topic on my recent post regarding the notion of boycotting breast cancer awareness day due to corruption, corporate profits/greed, conflict of interest (pharma companies that knowingly put cancer-causing hormones in milk and also sell drugs to treat cancer… check out the “Milk the Cancer” link in my post) and “the vicious cycle” faring better than the breast cancer patients who are supposed to be benefitting from the mass marekting of pink ribbons galore.

Anyway, I don’t mean to be a contrarian but I had to give my 2 cents regarding the idea of adding bleach to bath water. I really think you’ll find the short PSA video posted on the 11/11 The Canary Report interesting. It specifically talks about bleach. There are alternative disinfectants that are safer for people’s bodies and the environment.

The capful of Clorox in the bath reminded me of my first Halloween in a black, crepe-paper cat suit. It rained and the dye came off on my skin. My mother scrubbed me with a brush and Old Dutch Cleanser (like Comet) in the bathtub!

Vinegar and baking soda!! I have the creeps now about the communal w/d in my retirement home!! YUCK. I’m going to get some Bleach and run a cycle from now on. What we are being sold nowadays is toxic! I had to buy my own products for my unit at retirement place. Soap and hot water will clean and kill almost any germ (add scrubbing). Simple

I am a true believer in using Clorox. Nothing cleans and detox’s bathrooms like Clorox. Oh yes, that tea with lemon and honey is another great healing agent, especially if you have a cold. I sometimes take it a step further, adding a shot of bourbon and stirring with a cinnamon stick. If nothing else, it makes you sleep! Thanks for the great post!

i was just saying the other day that i needed to get some clorox to put in the dishwater. i use it a lot when i am making my products to make sure all the utensils are sanitized.

i am a very strong believer in natural remedies. i don’t like taking pharmaceuticals and will try everything else before hand. i do a lot of research on herbals and have a closet full of different ones. if i can make a tea or a tincture or a salve or a poultice i will. i think keeping your immune system strong is the better way to go for fighting off the nasties that are out there.

LOL…..my mom was a javex (clorox) fanatic also. Most of her house clothes has bleach spots on them.

Your post made me laugh as i thought about my mom.

The health advisory even recommends washing your fruits and veggies with clorox before putting them in the refrigerator

hello, ms. dorothy! i am a clorox fan and store plenty in my house. i have no qualms about going down on my hands and knees and wiping everything ‘wipable’ in the house. my children are clorox babies, meaning, they know momma’s ’strange’ clorox compulsions. the husband is particularly ‘aware’ that he will be cloroxed down if he breaks sanitary rules. ehem.. clorox is QUEEN.
