Hats off to Gabourey, she’s my idol

When I read the Huffington Post this morning and I saw one of the headlines which stated Gabourey Sidibe,” Precious the Oscar nominee”, may host Saturday Night Live, I thought there’s hope for the average person in the entertainment world and I hope they keep it coming.

Since I’ve been blogging (over three years), I’ve often wanted to write, and blast anyone who thinks being beautiful, skinny or rich is the only way you can be happy because it’s so out of whack with reality and when you think about the many celebrities lives you often find out they anything but happy and many times, they don’t even think they’re good looking and seem to always be searching for inner peace and self confidence.  Think about how often  we read about superstars drinking, using drugs, and being in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons, I think most of them don’t know how to enjoy a quiet and peaceful night at home with family and friends, instead they need recognition and thrills,  thus my point, this young women could be a role model to our kids and teach them that true beauty begins inside, and if you believe in yourself, others will feel the same about you plus achieving your life’s goals you need to take that first step into whatever it is you desire or dream you can do. I suspect Gabourey never thought about failure and continued to move forward, confident life and her future was there for the taking.

So I celebrate her success, and I hope she does host Saturday Night Life, and that there are more shows in her future and perhaps Doctor Phil will have her on his show to tell our children and parents, what motivated this young women to truly understand that a successful life begins within you and your feelings about yourself. And in my opinion simple thoughts, trusting and approving of who you are, and accepting confidence is a gift we give ourselves which resonates from inside of our heart and souls and minds.  Thus my very best to this precious young woman who I hope we see a great deal of in the near future, and that her world continues to blossom and she becomes a role model for our young people to know, respect and want to emulate, a hero of sorts defying what we normally think is the road to success and being popular, putting a nail in the coffin of the old saying you have to be beautiful to make it in this world, when beauty is simply a word and this women is a real person going places she could only have dreamed of first.

Hi Dorothy, I do wish that young woman some GREAT success. I’ve had a weight problem all of my adult life (since my first son was born) —so I relate to your thoughts about what we are ‘expected’ to look like. I spent WAY too many years being miserable and unhappy with myself. Thanks for hubby George, I finally learned to love myself just as I am…. I know that I will never be skinny –but that is okay. I am healthy so that is what is important.

    Hugs,
    Betsy

So well said, Dorothy. I hope she handles her success in a healthy way. We need positive role models for our children and she shows that success, even when you are at your lowest, can be achieved.

Hi there! Hopping in to visit!

Haven’t watched Precious yet, skimmed through the movie, though, to see some fine acting from Mariah Carey, Mo’nique, and Gabourey. Hope I have the time this weekend!

A lot of people think that it’s all about being beautiful, skinny, rich, and having nice assets. It’s a great thing that that mentality is gradually changing due to the arrival of people like Gabourey. I bet a lot of people around her thought she might not make it because she’s ‘black, fat, and ugly’ but she did and that IS something! Hats off to Gabourey, indeed! I hope we see a lot more like her, to inspire people.

Well said, Madam! I agree with everything you said. Hoping for more people like her to surface!

I know she will have a very hard time to find roles in Hollywood, but with her talent, there are many outlets for her to show off her stuff. Perhaps we will get to see her on Broadway and the bright lights.

Amen! When I see the skinny, skinny girls on TV I always want to give them a sandwich. They must be starving.

Very nice post Dorothy and I’m so happy there is room in this world for regular people and I think this young lady would make an excellent role model.

“you have to be beautiful to make it in this world”

We are all beautiful no matter what size or shape. We can achieve any dream we want, if we want it badly enough. I hope she can get that across to the younger floks.

    Great post!

OMG. I often think that SAME thing about those skinny, rich, famous celebrities who are forever in the tabloids. I am such a HUGE FAN and huge supporter of Gabourey. She is an EXCELLENT role model, and an amazingly talented actress. I sure hope to see more of her in future films.

Well said Dorothy! It’s high time that dreams are given a chance and that all the “real” kids of the world out there see that anyone can make their dream come true. Self doubt should have no place in anyone’s heart.

    Have a great weekend!!!

Celebrities are under constant scrutiny from the public and that pressure to look a certain way and be a certain way make them self-consciouse of everything about themselves. It’s sad how many of them go to extreme diet and under the knife to look beautiful. Natural beauty is a rarity in today’s show biz as plastic beauty is so celebrated. I’ve heard about the movie “Precious” and I believe it has been nominated for many awards. Good for Gabourey Sidibe to be who she is and I hope she doesn’t change herself in the future as many stars ended up doing to fit in Hollywood.

Self esteem is the best gift a person can give herself. But it doesn’t take much to tear it away from someone.
Good for Gabourey! She’s a talented, beautiful young lady!

I think she is so very talented and BEAUTIFUL! No, maybe not in the so called traditional way…But, she is a beautiful person and and beautifuo soul, too. And, she has been signed to be a “regular” on a NEW Cable show…(Either HBO or Showtime–I can’t remember…) So…she is doing just great!

In defense of many “stars” who are NOT drunks or drug addicts and who live productive lives with family’s, etc.–But see, they don’t sell papers…but there are more of them than not. And all of them–including the people who have substance abuse problems, are just people, like everyone else. The Rehab places would not stay in business just from ‘the stars’…there are millions of other people who have these problems, too….Personally, I think those in ‘the biz’ get a bad rap because the media has to have things to write about and to feed our insatiable hunger for gossip….! I think it is a shame that these people are singled out in this way. Hust my opinion.

She is a powerful example of the confidence that comes from a positive life. I LOVE her!

I do think that we downplay the importance of inner beauty. As I get older, I find myself grabbing for the wrinkle cream and covering the gray hairs, but it is too easy to get carried away. I tell my kids that no matter what you look like when you’re young, there will be a day when all you have to show the world is what is inside. If you want to tweak what happening on the outside while you focus on being a beautiful person, the that’s fine. If you lose focus being a beautiful person on the inside in favor of putting all your energy into outer beauty, then you’ve started to lose your soul.

I hope that young girls can start to realize how fleeting outer beauty is and how broadly beauty can be defined.
