Halloween in our Family

I’m so excited about Halloween on Friday.  For the first time I’ll be heading over to my sister and Lisa’s house to share Halloween with several of my nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and friends.  My sister Diane and Lisa have the patience of saints, so they have this big celebration planned where they will be decorating their garage in the Halloween style and knowing them I can’t wait to see what they have in store for the kids.  All of us have been given assignments to help with the festive party; mine is to purchase the tablecloths, napkins, cups and make sure they have Halloween theme all over them.  I’ve ordered the glow lights and some toys to go along with the other surprises planned.  I’m excited because I’ve never taken the time to be a part of this and I think it’s going to be crazy but fun.  I suppose we’ll be bobbing for apples doing all the things kids do on Halloween and we’ll serve snacks and pizza before going out on the streets and then decide who will escort the kids all dressed up in their wonderful costumes to the neighbors homes to fill their bags with candy.   (Pictures coming)

When I lived in Wheatfield, there were very few homes on the streets, now there are numerous subdivisions and I imagine there will be plenty of treats for the kids.  Which reminds me of the seriousness of the occasion; even though we know our neighbors and neighborhood we will of course check the candy and make every effort to keep the evening safe and fun for the children.  This includes giving them the rules for walking on the streets if there are no sidewalks and making them conscience of the cars on the roads.  I love the idea of sharing the children and their creative costumes with friends and neighbors, however it will be stressful until every child is done and home safely.

Thinking about this, it may become a family tradition continued every year in their home. (Sorry Lisa and Diane, you should have thought of this before you planned such a great party) now you’re trapped with the extravaganza at your house every year. Once again, making memories the children will have for their lifetime and I’m happy that I’ll be a part of the celebration. Appreciative that Lisa and Diane suggested I come and surprisingly; I said yes.  In the past I’ve never taken the time to participate in these events, recently I’ve been able to do it and my reward; seeing the smiles and fun a child will have doing what I otherwise would have only heard about from my family.

I’ll be bringing Noah to the party and he’ll spend the night and play with his cousins, he lives in Eden which means he doesn’t see them as often as if he lived in the neighborhood.  My daughter has been working at making sure the kids see each other on a regular basis allowing them to grow up interacting with each other and making memories to remember.  Her purpose being confident her kids know the importance of their family while sharing time and celebration together.  Learning that watching television and playing video games are alright provided you still remember you’re not a robot who only needs a battery to recharge; on the contrary we are human and need each other to stay in touch, focused, and charged on living life as a family; understanding what it really takes to feel fulfilled knowing when you need someone there is a family member waiting to help. So off to the family party I’ll go and wondering how I’ll do with all the energetic young kids dressed and ready for Halloween.  I’ll be back with details and how the sleepover goes. Happy Halloween, be safe, and have fun giving and sharing with family and friends.

Hello Grammology fans I’m Dorothy’s daughter Sherry and I’ve written a few blogs for my mom as she’s written a lot of things about my family (some I’ve not been so pleased with) however always respected and understood as her perspective.  Now it’s my turn and I can’t wait until she reads what I have to say (this will be fun). Everyday in the newspapers there are reports of economic recession… there is no respite from the tumbling stock markets across the country. Nowhere to look and nowhere to find comfort.

Are You doing what you really want in Life?

Are you really doing what you want with your life?

Even grandmas my age have regrets.  In fact recently I’ve spoken to my friends and most of them would have changed several things if they could go back in their lives.  Of course, we know that’s not possible; so forward you proceed.  However, is there something you can do to make your life what you dreamed it would be?

Would you have to quit your job?  Move out of your neighborhood?  Go to school, or retire.  There are many things that have a profound impact on your happiness even when you’re old.  Often it’s overwhelming when I think about what I would really like to be doing.  Yes me, I’m far from where I’d planned to be at this time in my life, and frankly my time is short-lived.  So I’ve read some books and been seriously thinking about what I need to do to change my course and asking myself what is really important to me right here and now.  As I ponder I wonder if I’ll be surprised at my answers so let me know some of your thoughts as well, because we all know misery loves company.

Even more intense, as I go through this will I have the courage to make the changes?  You read books, watch talk shows which give advice and experience where the objective is to help you move forward in a different direction.  As I mentioned in other articles there are no reruns in this world.  You get one chance and that’s it so with this in mind…I’m thinking.  What’s my next move?  Will I be making a transformation which ultimately will make me happier? Or will things remain status quo.

Most of us think about what we missed or secretly dream about what really would make us happy and ultimately achieve our goals.  So for my New Years resolution, and yes it’s early I’m going to think and dream about what I haven’t done which I really would like to do.

So here are some of my first thoughts...

Retirement

I may be tired from working hard lately but I’m exhausted from just keeping up with what is happening on Wall Street it’s disturbing to see the mismanagement and greed we’ll have to pay for.  When my 401 envelope comes I throw it in my file cabinet unopened (I am in no way suggesting you do the same, but personally I can’t stomach reading it.) I’m thoroughly convinced the only way I’ll be able to retire is by winning the lottery.  The main factor in putting off retirement is maintaining health insurance coverage. It seems that at a time in life when health care is of prime importance the availability of decent insurance coverage and providers is lacking. I’ve several friends in the same boat, staying in the work force longer then anticipated. In 2007, almost 39% of the labor force was over 55 years old and over 10% of people 70 years of age and older  who are not institutionalized are still working. The only saving grace for me is I enjoy my job and have Grammology.com where I can vent my frustration (aren’t you lucky?) Furthermore, with the wonderful news that I’m FREE from cancer I’ll be writing more!

Happy Weekend

Because of lamenting about my life; I thought I‘d make this an update post and give up on my psychological thoughts for awhile.
